How to get up the motivation to workout?

I’m not fat. It’s just lately all I’ve been doing is lying around watching tv and eating. I always tell myself today you’re gonna run up and down the stairs or at least do something, but I always put it off! How can I muster up a bit of motivation? Thank you.

Ramesh Klinkert answers:

“you can’t cross a sea by merely standing there and staring at the water”
“dare to dream it work to achieve it”

Linda asks…

When is the best time of the day to workout?

Also, what type of things should I eat to promote a vigorous workout?

Ramesh Klinkert answers:

I love working out early in the morning (mainly because that’s when I have the most energy!)
I workout a 6:30..I feel like when you work out in the morning you have energy for the rest of the day. And if you exercise first thing in the morning.. You won’t have any distractions or any events you have to go to.. Once your done, you get on with your day!

If you workout in the late morning/afternoon you might lose motivation, and you have things to go to. It depends on the person!

Whatever is best for you and your schedule, as long as your doing it!
My friend used to workout at midnight

The best foods to eat if your working hard are complex carbs+protein.
It’s best to have more carbs before your workout then after..
Eat a granola bar (Kashi, chewy ones are the best) and drink lots of water

Then after have a complex carb+protein such as
homemade oatmeal with milk, fruit w/ 1/2 cup cottage cheese, yogurt with granola or fruit, eggs with whole grain toast, or even a protein shake with fruit and milk..
Your body NEEDS protein after working out so the muscles can repair faster.. If your lifting weights, give your body a day of rest to recover..You can do cardio everyday if you choose

Daniel asks…

How do you get the motivation to get up early and workout?

I’m a busy mommy and my husband works a lot so I don’t have a ton of time to workout. I’m trying to lose the rest of this baby weight as my 10 year high school reunion is in three months. The only time I really have is early in the morning before hubby goes to work and baby gets up. I’ve seriously set my alarm for over a week to get up and it’s still not happening. Any ideas on how to motivate myself and get up super early. Any experiences??

Ramesh Klinkert answers:

I think you should draw a table of what you want to achieve for each day of the week. Getting up is tiring (I know as a mom how hard it is to motivate yourself or find time when all you want to do is nap when they’re sleeping!), but maybe set yourself 20 sit ups, 20 lunges on each leg and 10 press-ups (for example!) and do these each day for the first week, changing them around a bit and doing different things on different days. Then in the second week, increase each one to 30x and maybe add another exercise like squats or something.

I also found using a skipping rope (seriously) was less boring and helped me break up some of my routine.

You could also try ‘strollercise’! When you have to go to the shops, or take the baby to play group or whatever, you could put your trainers on and try taking a jog with the stroller. Lots of people do it to get back in shape and it doesn’t matter if you look daft on the street, because this is about you feeling better and getting exercise! I see people do it round my way all the time. You could try and get this in to your routine as well and take longer routes to wherever you’re going to get more exercise.

I’m also wondering whether you could find some time to join a ‘Strollesize’ group with your local park if you want company and motivation. It kills three birds with one stone, as you burn calories doing high intensity strollercise, you and the baby get some sunlight and fresh air and it will improve your overall energy levels. The increased energy levels may also give you time to sneak in 20 minutes exercise in the morning.

Finally, keep checking back to your table for each week and tick off when you have completed each round of exercises. This will make you mentally feel motivated. With a balanced, low sugar diet (avoiding chocolate, biscuits, coca cola, heavy deserts, etc), you really will see results as these are the biggest destroyers of good diet/fitness regimes! Drink lots of water and make sure you get a balanced diet of veg, fish, meat if you eat it and some carbs and i think you’ll do fine.

The removal of refined sugar from the diet will boost you energy levels and make you feel better in the morning. The worst thing about geting in shape after having a baby is being so tired constantly, but i just pushed myself throu it when i wanted to exercise. I wasn’t hard on myself the days that i just couldn’t face it, as it’s a tough job being a mum. Don’t be hard on yourself, but have your goal in sight and i’m sure you’ll do great.

I hope your reunion is fab and that some of this advice can help you.!
