Michael asks…
For altruistic behavior in animals, how is inclusive fitness increased by kin selection?
Also, how does it contribute to social behavior?
Ramesh Klinkert answers:
Inclusive fitness is a concept invented to explain the apparent paradox of how some eusocial insects (such as ants and bees) have worker castes that do not reproduce. Individual fitness is of course calculated on how many offsprings one have that survive to adulthood and reproduce. Inclusive fitness is calculated on how many relatives one raises to adulthood. It was thought that since bees and ants are more closely related to their sisters than to their own offspring (3/4 vs. 1/2), they benefit more by raising sisters rather than their own young. Inclusive fitness therefore was thought to be an answer to one of the greatest puzzles in nature of the evolution of individuals that did not reproduce. Intoxicated by the apparent success of inclusive fitness theory, the discipline of sociobiology was born in the late 1970’s and it attempted to explain all sorts of seemingly altruistic behavior in all sorts of animals. Sociobiology provoked a lot of negative reactions and rebuttals from many scientists, who pointed out that it was simply bad, overreaching science.
Since then, there have been numerous research efforts on eusocial insects, and the results are summarized in the paper below. A quote:
“The altruism of insect workers has puzzled researchers for decades. Inclusive fitness theory suggests that high relatedness has been key in promoting such altruism. Recent theory, however, indicates that the intermediate levels of relatedness found within insect societies are too low to directly cause the extreme altruism observed in many species. Instead, recent results show that workers are frequently coerced into acting altruistically. Hence, the altruism seen in many modern-day insect societies is not voluntary but enforced.”
The workers therefore did not voluntarily give up reproduction, but they were merely slaves of their queen mothers. Since bees and ants are often thought of as superorganisms. The workers are therefore analogous to the body cells of, say, a cow. The body cells, blood cells, liver cells, heart cells etc. Play no role in reprouduction and yet they are vital to the survival of the cow. Reproduction is left to the testes and ovaries of the cow, just as the drones and queens are the specialists that take care of reproduction in an insect colony. Viewed in this light, it is therefore no surprise that eusociality evolved, even in termites in which there is no inclusive fitness advantage for the workers. All that it needs for eusociality to occur is for the queen to evolve ways to enslave its daughters. Doing so greatly increases the likelihood of her survival and the survival of her queen daughter. That is all that is needed to ensure eusociality will evolve. There is no need for any inclusive fitness calculations. It is all a matter of individual selection.

William asks…
Will i lose body fat and gain muscle with my lifestyle?
Im currently going to be starting a workout routine which is:
monday – weights, light cardio
tuesday – cardio, abs
wednesday – weights, light cardio
thursday – cardio, abs
friday – weights, light cardio
I dont have a specialized diet, but I dont necessarily eat terrible. I dont eat to lose weight though, so it still possible to lose body fat and gain muscle without a real proper fitness diet?
Ramesh Klinkert answers:
First of all, if you’re under 18 seriously reconsider if you want to train five days a week, especially if you have less then six months experience with bodybuilding. Your workout looks good, but Wednesday is an ideal rest day to allow your joints, core and central nervous system to recover. Otherwise you might end up burning out in the long run…
Regarding your diet, you don’t have to follow a specialized bodybuilding diet, but if you want to build lean muscle (muscle without fat), you need to consume a lot more calories than usual.
If you’re going to be training 4-5 days a week, you need to eat 5-6 meals a day, never more than 4 hours apart. Each of these meals should contain at least 400 calories (that means medium to large servings).
Most bodybuilder eat 4 times a day, and use protein and carb supplements (shakes) twice a day to make up their six meals.
Without sufficient calories you can gym and push weights till you are blue in the face, you’re results are gonna be slim to none. Why? ‘Cause if you don’t feed your muscles, they can’t grow!
Before you start training, go to this website and work out the amount of calories you need to eat to maintain your current weight – then add 500 to that number and that’s the amount of calories you should consume if you want to build muscle.
Remember this quote: You can’t out train a lousy diet…
Hope that helps.

Susan asks…
Will burning calories result in gastric trouble?
Hello Fitness experts. I am 6.1 feet tall and 86 kgs(189 lbs). I have joined gym to cut some fat arround waist area. I work in rotational shifts and pretty inconsistent food habits. I burn 400 calories(thread mill and cycling 200 each).
Its been 2 weeks that i have joined gym and i see my stamina increase while i lost 1 inch of my waist size.
Now after 2 week of gym, i noticed gastric trouble for the first time in my life. Im 27 year old
will burning out calories effect on gastric trouble or is it bcoz of inconsistent food habits.
Your views and answers would be of great help.
Ramesh Klinkert answers:
It’s more likely to be linked to ‘inconsistent food habits’ (to quote you).
As well as all that exercise you do need to eat properly.
The USDA suggests that 50% of your calories come from carbohydrates, about 30-35% from fat, and about 15-20% from protein. For a 2000 calorie per day diet, that equals 250 grams carbohydrates, 67 grams fat and 75 grams protein per day.
Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dine like a pauper.
